Knowing Body

Tia K. Panagos, M.A.

As a Body Psychotherapist . . .
I help people connect what is happening in their bodies to what is happening in their lives and minds.
Another way to say this is that I help a person with the feelings and thoughts that are related to the sensations in her or his body. When something is not working in a person's body, there is something not working in the person's life and/or how they think about their life experiences. Every pain, illness, injury and dis-ease has its origins in an unresolved experience and/or limiting belief. I can help you slow down and understand the unique ways your body shares its wisdom, and path to renewed health, with you. You will learn how to be instrumental in your own healing and on-going health and well being.

Body psychotherapy is not a substitute for medical treatment, but can profoundly support the work you are already doing to treat an illness, injury or disease.

I am also intuitively aware of what is happening in a person's energetic field and am naturally drawn to interact with it in ways which help alleviate the patterns underlying illness, injury, dis-ease or discomfort.

Everything we are aware of in this world (and much we are only becoming aware of) is made of energy. Some energy moves slowly, like the energy of a rock. Our bodies (from the skin inward) are made of energy which moves somewhat faster than a rock. And, the energy around and moving through our bodies (think auras, prana, chakras, energy fields) is fast moving energy, which is easy to interact with and to evoke change within. The patterns of our thoughts, emotions and other physical sensations all show themselves in the energy field around our bodies. When the energy field shifts, the body and mind are directly affected and invited to shift as well.

As we get more comfortable within the psychotherapeutic relationship, I am likely to integrate energy work into our sessions. You will likely stop even noticing that I am interacting with your energy field, as we continue to talk and you stay aware of your inner experience. The energy work I do is completely non-invasive and you remain fully clothed. My hands will simply orient in response to your body, as much needed life energy flows through my open core to you.

After energy work, change can continue to happen on the more physical level (the denser energy of your body) for a period of days or even weeks. Clients often report needing more rest as their bodies and minds remodel, based on the new energy patterns. Rather than focusing directly on a client's symptoms, this approach attends to the core of the dis-ease or discomfort. So, the originating cause is addressed, rather than the layers of attempts (symptoms) the body has created to cope with the original overwhelming factor.

Again, energy work is not  a substitute for medical care, but can enhance recovery and allow healing energies to be where they are needed.

Josie had been rear-ended in her car three times in the past five years and sustained a whip lash injury in each one. Although she credited yoga to much of her recovery, she still avoided certain poses for fear of neck pain and further injury. When Josie began to work with me, and really feel into the sensations of her neck, she kept thinking about her work and how she never finished the book she had started to write. She sensed that the accidents were attempts to push her forward and that she had been resisting this forward movement in her life. With this awareness, Josie was ready to release the thoughts that kept her from finishing her book, while also releasing the resistance in her neck.

Suzanne came to me for energy work because her legs had felt numb and tingly on and off since she was a teenager. She didn't like to be touched and had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. We found that her legs were overflowing with energy so intense that she kept wantng to move around on the massage table.

Coming to me for body psychotherapy, Suzanne was again able to connect with the impulse to move in her legs. A profound sadness and fear came through Suzanne and we slowed way down so she could stay present and feel safe. She began remembering being in a room as a child with an adult who hurt her. All her legs wanted to do was run, but she was not able to at the time and the life saving impulses remained buried in her legs all these years. Over a number of sessions, Suzanne was able to safely release the charge and regain comfortable sensations in her legs.

You can experience vibrant aliveness and clarity of mind through presence in your body.

I invite you to love and trust your body. I invite you to feel yourself breathing and know that you have everything you need in this moment. Know that you are guided and never alone. Feel your connectedness with all that Is.

I invite you to pay attention to what is happening in your body more and more. You can know your true Self deeply by slowing down and feeling into each moment as you experience it through Being in your body.

I invite you to release judgment. Simply observe your thoughts and know they are not You. What you feel when you experience the sensations of life is You. When your jaw hangs open at the sight of an incredible sunset, before any words form, that is You. Pure experience, void of thoughts.. that is You, as you are part of all that Is.

From this place of pure Being, there are no limiting beliefs or fear. There is simply pure joy and fulfillment and peace. Not the idea of it, but the physical feeling of deep, radiating warmth and knowing in your body and soul. All is well.
